How Bankruptcy May Improve Your Credit Score

Filing for bankruptcy protection is not an easy decision to make. There are many concerns that come to mind when thinking about how bankruptcy will affect your life, and chief among them is the worry that your credit rating will be so damaged, you won't be able to secure any type of credit, even at terrible rates, ever again.

But here's some interesting information -- in many cases, the damage to your credit score is not nearly as dire as expected. Over time, you can vastly improve your credit score after a bankruptcy, possibly making you eligible for more loans in the future.

One reason your score would not be seriously affected is that, if you are in such dire circumstances to even consider filing for bankruptcy, then chances are you don't have a stellar score to begin with.

After filing, some consumers may even see a slight bump up in their credit scores. And this is due to your credit report being largely wiped clean after a bankruptcy. Your high balances are removed as well as any late payments or records of unpaid debts. All the accounts included in your bankruptcy will be noted as "Included in Chapter 7 Bankruptcy" or "Included in Chapter 13 Wage Earner Plan," depending on which type of bankruptcy you filed.

Of course, you aren't likely to see a big boost, however, if you've just been getting by or not paying bills at all, your credit isn't likely to fall much further.

But a bankruptcy could help improve your score over the long term. The reason? When calculating scores, the FICO formula used to calculate credit scores are set up to grade the consumer's credit standing as compared with that of other consumers in a similar financial situation.

The FICO formula divides consumers into 10 groups, using what it calls "score cards." It then ranks the consumers in each group based on the others in the group. One of these score cards is bankruptcy filers. In other words, when you file bankruptcy, your score is determined based on how you do compared with other bankruptcy filers.

As a result, credit scores can run the gamut among bankruptcy filers. In that population, you'll find some consumers who have very good FICO scores, some who have very bad FICO scores, and many in between. Granted, you won't be able to bring your score up to the perfect 850 as long as your bankruptcy stays in your report, but with good credit management after filing, a score in the 700s isn't impossible.

Then again, your credit score alone shouldn't affect whether or not you decide to file bankruptcy. Most experts would still say that if you can dig your way out of debt without declaring bankruptcy, that's a better way to go, since, among other things, you may be forced to sell certain assets — in some states even your home or car — to meet the bankruptcy filing requirements. (This can be the case with Chapter 7 bankruptcy, but not Chapter 13.) Another issue: Given the tougher new bankruptcy rules, you may not even be able to declare bankruptcy.

That said, if your debt payments are crushing you, bankruptcy will give you a much-needed fresh start. And with a few clever credit repair strategies, your score could be back in the 700s within two or three years.

Giving the Ipod a Run for Its Money - A Review of Microsoft's Zune MP3 Player

For several years now, Apple's ipod has been the leader in the digital media player (DMP) market. And for good reason, the Ipod is a good product with great performance and features.
But Microsoft's introduction of the Zune, the company's MP3 DMP player, Apple is facing some serious competition.

Microsoft released the Zune in late 2006. The Zune has done very well in the marketplace and is giving the Ipod a real run for its money. The Zune and the Ipod are similar in price and include many of the same features. However, there are some things that the Zune has which the Ipod does not.

Below are the list of features supported by Zune but not the Ipod (based on a comparison of a 30GB Zune and a 30GB Ipod):

Built in FM tuner
Social networking
Custom background

In addition, the Zune features file sharing and Wi-Fi (wireless) support. Every Zune will have the ability to wirelessly share and play songs, videos, and pictures with other Zune users. Zune will be able to hold 7,500 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 100 hours of video. Microsoft will definitely take a big chunk of the MP3 player market from Apple, especially since a lot more people use PCs than Macs, so that may be a big factor in how well the Zune performs in the marketplace.

Other great features include the subscription-based Zune Marketplace, which allows you to access an online database of new music without having to download it first to your computer. Also, Zune Marketplace allows users to download as many songs as you want for a flat monthly fee. Recently, Microsoft introduced a 120 GB Zune. So, Zune is truly a portable media player.

Setting Goals Is the First Step Toward Success

In any business or personal endeavor, we have goals that we want to meet. Well, when you actually state your goals and write them down somewhere you can see them every day, then success is right around the corner. You can be successful by simply changing or even tweaking one or two things in your daily itinerary to make a world of difference. In order to be successful in business or in life, there must be a set, established model to follow; a plan.

Goal setting is actually very easy but often done incorrectly. If your goal is to make $50,000 in saved income by this time next year, then you can't keep holding that goal out in front of you and expect to reach it without making a plan to get there.

1. Take your goal, your reasonable goal, write it down and post it up where you will see it everyday. You must consider whether your goal is obtainable or not, can you save $1 million by this time next year? Or is $50,000 a more reasonable goal. What you want to do is set your goal just a bit out of reach, just a step outside of your comfort zone. This creates a healthy challenge for your personal growth.

2. Take your goal and break it down into smaller, more obtainable goals for you to work on one step at a time. Starting with a huge goal is not only intimidating and overwhelming, but it leaves you asking yourself, "Well, what do I do now? Where do I even begin?"

3. Break down your goal into monthly goals, weekly goals and daily tasks. It is necessary that your daily tasks allow you to complete your goal for that week. If you are going to save $50,000 by this time next year, then you will either have to cut back on spending or increase your income. There are lots of resources available to help you reach your goals, you just have to use them consistently.

Make your plan and plan your work. This process will help you achieve your desired goals.
